Abstract |
In "The Group" McCarthy weaves together the lives of eight Vassar College graduates during the 1930s as they grapple with sex, sexism, money, motherhood, and family. In "Birds of America" nineteen-year-old Peter Levi travels to Europe as the conflict in Vietnam escalates where he discovers the limits of philosophy in a time of social unrest. "Cannibals and Missionaries", a thriller about an airline hijacking, delves into the psychology of terrorism and the value of art. Also included, the 1970 essay, "The novels that got away", a look at the author's unfinished fiction. |
