Speakers examined the uses of food in children's books from the nineteenth century to the present day, and in a wide variety of genres, from ancient fable to twenty-first-century fantasy. From the contributions to this collection, it is shown that food within literature not only reflects the society, culture and time in which it is prepared, but also is widely used by authors as a means to instruct their juvenile readers, and to deliver moral messages. |
