| Abstract | Alexandre Tansman has had the privilege of living for a number of years in closest association with Stravinsky, and of discussing with him, on countless occasions, many and varied musical problems. He is, therefore, uniquely qualified not only to set down accurately Stravinsky's own ideas, but also to destroy certain conventional interpretations, very clever but at the same time very arbitrary, which up to now have been by-products of Stravinsky's stormy career. For the name of Igor Stravinsky is the signal for controversy among music lovers the world over. Seldom has an artist during his lifetime aroused comment so wide and so conflicting in its nature. Alexandre Tansman, himself one of the richest personalities in contemporary music, has written about this book not from any desire to add still more personal bias on the "case" of Stravinsky, but rather to create for the work of this gifted artist, who happens to be his friend, the spiritual setting he feels it deserves.
