| Summary | Annotation The nuclear reactors currently in operation around the world produce large quantities of used nuclear fuel annually. Management of this waste is a pressing issue with important political, environmental, economic and societal consequences. One option is to operate a closed fuel cycle by recovering and reusing valuable constituents from the fuel, with the duel benefits of raw material demand reduction and minimisation of hazardous end waste. This book presents an authoritative overview of spent fuel reprocessing and considers future prospects for advanced closed fuel cycles. Part 1 introduces the recycling and reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel, reviewing past and current technologies, the possible implications of Generation IV nuclear reactors and associated safely and security issues. Parts 2 and 3 then focus on aqueous-based reprocessing methods and pyrochemical methods respectively. After Part 4 which considers cross-cutting aspects of engineering and process chemistry, the final part of the book addresses the potential for implementation of advanced closed fuel cycles in different parts of the world. |
