| Summary | Annotation Chosen by Margaret Walker herself, the one hundred poems in This Is My Century stand as a defining self-summation of a writer whose work, as Stephen Vincent Ben©♭t once wrote, exhibits "a controlled intensity of emotion and a language that, at times, even when it is most modern, has something of the surge of biblical poetry." Walker first gained wide attention in 1942, when a volume of her work was selected for inclusion in the Yale Series of Younger Poets. She was the first African American to be chosen for the prestigious series, an occasion that also marked one of the very first times a black writer had been recognized by any kind of national literary award. Over subsequent decades, she enriched American literature in endless ways through her teaching and writing, and in 1993, she received an American Book Award for Lifetime Achievement. Today, Walker's voice still resonates with particular power; it is still her century. Book jacket. |
