| Summary | The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between job satisfaction and communication satisfaction of night nurses versus day nurses. Theory of Humanistic Nursing Communication and Herzberg's Two Factor Motivation Theory serve as guides Duldt's for the study. A convenience sample of 17 night and 20 day RN's at an Eastern North Carolina hospital responded to the Job Satisfaction-Communication Importance Questionnaire. Four hypotheses were tested, predicting no significant differences between night and day nurses' levels of job satisfaction, job importance, communication satisfaction, and communication importance. The data showed no differences in day and night nurses' job satisfaction, communication satisfaction, and communication importance. Significant differences were found in younger night nurses aged 35 or less in comparison with day nurses of similar ages for individual items related to job-personal satisfaction, organizational job satisfaction, satisfaction with help received from staff, and satisfaction and importance of communication with others. Also, significant differences were found in night nurses' job importance levels in comparison with day nurses. Night nurses consistently were the less satisfied group, indicating a need for increased communication and recognition from management. |
