| Summary | Reproductive timing and temporal patterns of energy storage were studied in North Carolina populations of Argopectan gibbus. The objectives of this research were to describe the annual reproductive cycle of A. gibbus and estimate population energy reserve levels throughout the year by analysis of adductor muscle protein content. Histological analysis of gonadal tissue revealed synchronized maturation and spawning among all sizes of individuals collected. Comparisons of the proportion of gonad dry weight to total body dry weight (gonadal index) suggested a single prolonged spawning peak between January and April 1990, and a shorter less intense spawning event the following winter. An analysis of the protein content of the adductor muscle failed to find significant correlations between total protein and stage of gametogenesis. However, the comparisons of the proportion of muscle dry weight to gonad dry weight did appear to show an inverse relationship. Results suggest that the reproductive periodicity of North Carolina scallops differs from that of previously described populations of A. gibbus in Florida, and that the fluctuation in timing and intensity of reproductive events in this species should be considered in commercial management. |
