| Summary | Annotation Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) was a Swedish nobleman and scientist who spent his life exploring the physical sciences, using his position on the Swedish board of mines to introduce technical advances while also pursuing his own studies in anatomy, astronomy, and mathematics. Then, in his mid-fifties, his career was interrupted by a powerful spiritual awakening. He began to journey in spirit form to heaven and hell, conversing with angels, devils, and spirits of the departed. What he learned was so compelling that he risked his reputation to contradict church doctrine and publish what he had seen. Swedenborg describes in detail the process of passing from our physical plane to the spiritual world. He tells us that death is no more than a step from one state of being into another, and that our lives continue in that otherworld.
