Abstract This book is a survey of women's activities in music performance, composition, teaching, and patronage from the times of the Ancient Greeks to the present, with an emphasis on art music in Europe and the Americas. This book moves beyond Western art music to include chapters on women in popular music and jazz, women as financial supporters of the arts, and women's roles in non-Western music.
Abstract "Over the centuries, individuals and institutions, events and societies have affected the ways in which women have composed, performed, and though about music. Until recently, histories of music were mainly concerned with male composers and performers. Only within the last generation have scholars undertaken to discover and evaluate the positions and contributions of women. [This book] now presents a fresh and unbiased account of the accomplishments of women, commencing with their role in antiquity, following their considerable influence through various periods of history, and ending with a discussion of contemporary feminist aesthetics. It documents the traditional function of women as the maintainers of culture in the home and the convent; the lives of those who broke out of this pattern and achieved fame and sometimes fortune by composing, performing, and even conducting; and the monumental efforts of women throughout the ages who have themselves supported the arts or who have raised funds to do so. The chapters on women in American popular music, in African-American music, and in non-Western music have an immediate appeal in today's world. [This book] is generously supplied with musical examples and pictures of prominent women musicians. Throughout the book, the discussion centers on music readily available in scores and recordings, and, in addition to the general bibliography, there is a list of suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter.
