520 3 a| Non-pregnant female rats were treated id.th five oral contraceptive pills ("Norlestrin," Parke, Davis & Co.) given at 24 hour intervals beginning at metestrus. A pseudopregnancy Interval of 13 days was induced. A similar dosage was given to pregnant rats before and after nidation. The representative estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and progestin (norethindrone acetate) components of the pill were given separately to two groups of pregnant animals after implantation. Five pills given to pregnant rats before implantation rendered the gravid females sterile. When given after implantation, the pills resulted in varying degrees of fetal resorption by day 15. At term delayed partuition and reduced litter size was observed. There was a significant reduction of normal fetuses at day 15 and young at term in estrogen-treated females. At day 15 all progesterone treated females exhibited fetuses not unlike controls; however, there was a significant reduction in the number born. A delay in partuition was noted in estrogen and progesterone-treated animals.;
