545 a| Born in London, and educated at Queen Anne's Caversham, Ruth Bright's studies were shared between music and the sciences. She received her Bachelor of Music degree in 1953 from the University of Melbourne, Australia. While still a school-girl her strong interest in music as a means of expressing emotion was evident as she began improvising music for drama, mime, and creative movement groups. Since 1959, Mrs. Bright has been working with music as a form of therapy, extending her sphere of knowledge from music, as such, to music, as a means of communication with those who find relationships difficult. Originally working only in psychiatry, Mrs. Bright became concerned with the care of the aged. Her work in the geriatric field has involved those with psychiatric illness, dementia, and geriatric rehabilitation, as well as important studies in alcohol-related brain damage. Ruth Bright is a well-known speaker at international conferences and a respected author of several books on music therapy and geriatric care, including Music in Geriatric Care, Practical Planning in Music Therapy for the Aged, and Musiktherapie in der Altenhilfe, written for translation and publication in West Germany. Mrs. Bright's energies have extended to help in the communities of Australia. She was Founding President of the Australian Music Therapy Association, is a member of community groups concerned with the needs of the disadvantaged, and actively involved in her church. Mrs. Bright's engineer husband and two children have been a source of much support for her, and playing chamber music with her family has brought her much joy.;
