| Abstract | Who are the artists of today and what conditions do they now live in? How important is the role of New York in making or breaking an artist? How do changes in our environment affect artists and the arts? What solutions do we have to offer for older artists who may not be receiving the support they need? According to National Artists Equity Vice President George Koch, the average artist is more highly educated yet more unemployed and less salaried than the average worker. More MFAs are graduating each year to a field that does not guarantee a career track, a steady salary and benefits. In order to cope, many artists have adopted the strategies of the marketplace. What kind of impact will this have on the future of the arts? Tackling these key issues in thought-provoking essays are Richard Swaim of the University of Baltimore, Richard Brown and John Robinson of the University of Maryland, C. Lynn Cowan of Johns Hopkins, Tom Bradshaw of the National Endowment of the Arts, Bruce Payne of Duke University, and arts consultant Ruby Lerner.
