| Abstract |
The second edition offers a complete overview of contemporary musical styles. This new, larger edition features 50% more pages of musical score, including complete sections from 36 different twentieth-century compositions by 18 composers. In the tradition of the first edition, the book includes complete pieces and movements, or long excerpts from all media, including electronic, in order that a work can be studied as a whole. Full scores are used throughout the text, with piano reductions added where appropriate. In addition, emphasis is placed on works for which recordings are readily available. Some excerpts from the previous edition have been expanded into complete sections, and narration has been added in Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat. New excerpts include works by: Crumb, Dallapiccola, Debussy, Messiaen, Reich, Reynolds, Varèse, and Zwilich. The text provides biographical information and references for each composer, along with revised analytical questions, allowing analytical sources to be studied in more detail. Compositions are listed chronologically and by medium, and an index of materials and procedures enables students to reference compositional techniques and materials in the pieces. |
