Summary Despite is basically defeatist and hurtful approach as an unsuccessful British professor attempts to cope with divorce, homosexuality and academia, 'Butley' contrives to be very funny. The stark, unsentimental approach to the homosexual relationship, the cynical send-up of academic life, the sceptical view of the teacher-pupil associations are all stunningly illuminated by continuous explosions of sardonic, needling, feline, vituperative and civilised lines. 'Butley' was first produced in Oxford in 1971.
