Abstract Although Federico Mompou's work covers several musical genres, it is undoubtedly his piano compositions which truly reflect the strength of his tremendous personality as a composer and an artist. Mompou's piano works offer the listener themes full of attractive suggestions, in the fundamentally musical field and in intrinsic instrumental value, both of which are indissolubly linked. The romantic flights of fancy, the impressionistic style, the strong Catalan roots or the sensitive erudition which defines surprisingly apt musical finds--like those of Chopin, Fauré, Scriabin or Grieg--are aspects which many people have seen as formative in Federico Mompou's music, and particularly his piano works. Although it is true that these elements influenced the composer, there are more than sufficient particularities, which can and should be observed in his music, to prove the definitive conclusion that his is a very special style of piano composition, a uniquely personal music, capable of becoming a source of all sorts of analysis. If we add to values he was endowed with, it is easy to understand why everyone who writes about music aspires--once they have studied it in depth--to refer to the life and works of this great Spanish composer. --from program notes.
