| Abstract | This paperback brings together for the first time in one volume two of B. H. Haggin's books on Toscanini. Haggin lived long enough to have heard Toscanini conduct at the Metropolitan Opera Company in 1914 and to hear him on compact disc in the 1980s. In Conversations with Toscanini (first published in 1959), Haggin uses his recollections of personal encounters with the maestro for observations on everything from the conductor himself to the commercial realities that affected his orchestras, performances, recordings, and reception by the press. In The Toscanini Musicians Knew (first published in 1967), Haggin interviewed musicians who performed under Toscanini; two of these interviews are published here for the first time. Both books have been edited and brought up-to-date by Thomas Hathaway, contributing editor to High Fidelity and Literary Executor of B. H. Haggin's Estate. As always with Haggin, this is criticism of the highest order--unsparing, literary, and squarely focused on the controversial achievements of the most renowned conductor of his day. |
