Abstract | The story of Motown is the stuff of legends. Founded in January 1959 by Berry Gordy, Jr., who used an $800 family loan as seed money, Motown ultimately grew into the largest independently-owned record company and the largest black-owned enterprise in the world. The roll call of Motown stars and hit records--rock, pop, soul, and jazz--is nothing short of astounding. Berry Gordy (and, in effect, Motown), although easily larger and more important than the honor itself, was inducted into the "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame" in 1988. This compilation provides every Motown fan with the most extensive and detailed discographies of the company's first releases ever published, covering over 5500 commerically-issued recordings released in the U.S. and England between 1959 and 1987 on thirty different labels. The record lists for each country are supported by four different indexes: performer name, song and record title, record number, and date of release. A supplementary discography of Detroit-based labels important in Motown's history is also included. The various Motown label discographies are further complemented by other useful features: a profile of Motown's founder, Berry Gordy, Jr., and the Gordy family; a biographical section covering many of Motown's brightest stars, with individual discographies; a discussion of the various Motown and Motown-related record labels. The book is illustrated with over fifty photographs, as well as reproductions of rare and unusual record labels and other Motown memorabilia. |
