| Summary | The purpose of this study is to examine how the development of Martin Luther's Eucharistic theology effected the popular piety of the laity in the sixteenth century. The sacrament of the Lord's Supper, the focal point of the worship service in the Christian Church, became a major point of controversy between the Catholics, Protestants, and among the different evangelical reform movements of the sixteenth century. It was through these controversies over the Lord's Supper, and the reforms in public worship which accompanied it, that the complexities of Martin Luther's reform theology were assimilated by the largely uneducated masses. To show this I have divided my study into five chapters. Chapter One explores the development of the Catholic Church's theology of the Eucharist in the Middle Ages and how it had effectively diminished the laity's role in the worship service. Chapter Two examines the early development of Luther's doctrine of the "Real Presence" and the conflict he had with the Catholic Church and its doctrine of Transubstantiation. The third chapter carries chronologically the development of Luther's Eucharistic theology throughout the sacramental controversy with Andreas Karlstadt and Huldrych Zwingli, and how this controversy attracted the laity's attention toward his reform theology. Chapters Four and Five conclude this study by illustrating how Luther's developing Eucharistic theology filtered down to the laity through the changes in the structure and music of the worship service. |
