Summary The problem of two-phase flow instability as applied to the direct generation of steam in a parallel-channel, line-focus solar system is addressed. Five types of flow instability have been identified as being potentially harmful to the operation of the system. The basic mechanism contributing to these instabilities and the criteria used to predict their onset are discussed. These criteria are presented in the form of two generalized maps that can be used for steady as well as transient operation. The analysis shows that the systems currently being considered can be made to operate in a stable manner with only minor modification.
