Abstract Former federal prosecutor Andrew C. McCarthy disputes the idea of an "Arab Spring". He contends that the Islam that shapes the Middle East inculcates in Muslims the self-perception that they are members of a civilization implacably hostile to the West. He argues that the majority of Muslims view the United States as a competitor to be overcome, not the herald of a culture to be embraced.
