| Abstract | When Terry's manager requests a "work with," she's had enough. No more demeaning work as a drug rep! Without calling, Terry packs and leaves town her destination being freedom. She travels from Boston to Charlotte and finds another world waiting. In Charlotte she sees a drug rep with her manager. The feelings the scene evokes come with an epiphany. Images flood her mind. She writes them down and sees a theme: Plantation - Jim Crow - integration - corporate plantation. African Americans have come full circle. From these images, she writes a play that explores racism and classism. Terry's fictional drama echoes her real world. Eric is a successful business owner who loves Terry at first sight. Bebe is a mysterious, beguiling entrepreneur. She offers Jessie, a blue-collar factory worker with higher aspirations, a ticket out. But Jessie has to discover that his world-view has been skewed by an unspoken class system he has bought into. Neeno's motto is "use what I've got to get what I want." She thinks what she wants must come from a man, but she can't decide which man. Mr. Benjamin, now deceased, told Terry about the 1898 massacre in Wilmington, N.C.
