| Summary | This survey was designed to determine the perceptions of head nurses regarding interpersonal communication behaviors. The following three research questions were addressed: 1) What are the specific communication behaviors most necessary for nurses? 2) How often is the use of ineffective communication behaviors noted by nurses? and 3) When nurses use ineffective communication behaviors, how detrimental is it to their performance? Using a descriptive survey design, a sample (N=50) of head nurses from five eastern North Carolina hospitals was asked to respond to the Communication Behaviors Questionnaire. Duldt's humanistic nursing communication theory provided the theoretical framework for the study. Findings were that 1) effective communication behaviors are perceived as very important to the nurse's performance; 2) negative communication behaviors are perceived to be quite detrimental to nurses; 3) negative communication behaviors are not used very often by nurses; and 4) listening is the communication behavior most necessary for nurses to have and most detrimental when not effectively demonstrated. Findings supported Duldt's theory of humanistic nursing communication as a potentially useful framework for practice, education and research. |
