Abstract On June 9 and 10, 1988, an exciting event took place at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, New York. Forty music therapists, from throughout the world, all of whom work with the terminally ill, met to discuss their work. Never before had there been such a gathering and the participants took full advantage of this unique and valuable opportunity. Overcoming the professional isolation so many endure, they met together to share ideas, experiences, what they had learned, questions, and concerns about how, as a profession, to move forward. The music therapists supported and challenged each other and came away with a strong commitment to the work and a renewed dedication to furthering the profession. This volume is comprised of the manuscripts which served as the basis for ten of the presentations given at the Symposium. They represent where music therapists, as a profession, stand. They include hard-earned information about music therapy in palliative care and thus demonstrate the growth and advances of the profession thus far. They point to areas, such as research, that need to be developed and provide suggestions as to how this might be done. The presentations were not of an introductory level, they were prepared specifically for music therapists with experience in palliative care. As people from other disciplines expressed an interest in these proceedings, a more general, introductory article on the practice of music therapy with the terminally ill has been added. Also included is an article which addresses the history of palliative care and points to new areas of focus.
