Summary CF-l mice were injected intraperitoneally with 0.02 ml/gm body weight of a 25X ethanol in saline solution. Ethanol and acetaldehyde levels, in blood and the uterine/oviducal lumen, were monitored for three hours. Uterine/oviducal luminal ethanol levels were closely associated with blood ethanol levels, since both concentrations dropped over a three hour time period. Uterine/oviducal and blood acetaldehyde data was inconclusive. In addition, CF-l mouse 2-cell stage embryos were exposed to ethanol (200-600 mg ethanol/100 ml medium) and acetaldehyde (5-500 mg acetaldehyde/100 ml medium) for 60 min. in vitro, and then maintained in culture for 105 hours. Embryos treated with ethanol concentrations as high as 600 mg/100 ml medium or acetaldehyde levels up to 10 mg/100 ml medium survived equally well as control embryos cultured in medium alone. These data suggest that ethanol and acetaldehyde may not directly affect pre-implantation embryos.
