| Abstract | This book is directed to the voice therapist in schools, clinics, and private practice, emphasizing the important aspects that will assist the therapist in achieving successful vocal rehabilitation. For professionals in allied fields seeking an overview of vocal rehabilitation, the author provides background information by a review of the literature and of the various approaches to vocal rehabilitation. Vocal therapy is presented in a step-by-step approach, emphasizing specific simplified techniques that alleviate and/or eliminate functional and organized dysphonias. New ways are utilized to develop the speaking voice with directed guidance given to the patient. Therapy is concentrated on the direct vocal rehabilitative process--changing the pitch, tone focus, quality, volume, and breath support for speech. A simple, fundamental method of establishing the natural pitch and tone focus is explained. The alteration of the various vocal elements is incorporated with an automated method of practice using replay and with naturalistic techniques for carry-over. The information is practical, not theoretical, encompassing a visual, sensory, and auditory approach. Vocal psychotherapy, an integral part of effective vocal rehabilitation, is extensively detailed. Additional therapy concepts which have been developed are associate therapy, illustrative therapy, and bibliotherapy. Also discussed is the vocal image, a new and vital factory in therapy, and vocal mythology. This book is intended to provide background information for professionals in allied fields seeking an overview of vocal rehabilitation.
