General noteBentom organized an independent Protestant congregation in Quebec in 1800. In 1802 his authority to perform the rites of marriage, baptism and burial was challenged by Jacob Mountain, Anglican bishop of Quebec. The attorney-general supported Mountain and at his trial, July 1803-1804, Bentom was adjudged not a bona fide minister.
