General noteIdentical in contents and typography with An astronomical diary or almanack for 1798 by Seth Chandler (Boston: J. Bumstead), except for the title page and the substitution of other material for Chandler's preface. Chandler's almanac, purporting to be an individual production, is actually based upon that of Nathaniel Low for the same year. Practically all the calculations for the rising and setting of the sun, the high tides, and the rising, setting, phases, and place of the moon are identical with Low's. The only exceptions are a divergence between the tide calculations from mid-June to mid-July and from mid-August to early September, and in those of the sun from the end of September to early October. The eclipse predictions following the preface are a briefer version of Low's, with the calculations the same. The astronomical notes on the calendar pages of the two almanacs are in part identical and the rest distinct. The ephemeris at the head of each calendar page in Chandler is not found in Low.
General noteBickerstaff's Genuine almanack for 1798, also issued at Boston by Russell, and Weatherwise's almanack for 1798, published at Boston by Bumstead and several other booksellers, are other anonymous reprints of Chandler from the same type and identical with the present one.
General noteEzekiel Russell died in 1796, but his name was carried in the firm's imprint into the succeeding year.
