| Abstract | "Duo-Pianism is the first available investigation and representation of two-piano music as an independent ensemble art. The subject material is organized into three sections. History [Book 1] views the development of duo-pianism as reflected in the kaleidoscope of musical evolution. Nature, Applications, and Problems [Book 2] treats of two-piano ensemble as a creative, interpretive, and educational medium. Interspersed with authoritative opinions of duo-pianists, composers, and pedagogues, this portion assumes the significance of a symposium. Literature [Book 3] presents a wealth of analyses, extensive lists of original two-piano compositions, and recorded music for two pianos. Concentrating all available data pertaining to two-piano playing within one single treatise, Duo-Pianism represents a first in musical literature. The work is a textbook for courses in piano ensemble, and provides fruitful reading to every music lover. | Biographical note | "Duo-Pianism originally was written as a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Fine Arts in musicology. The work is the outgrowth and scholarly research in the field. A weekly half-hour broadcast of two-piano music, played by Hans and Rosaleen Moldenhauer, has been sustained by radio station KGA, Spokane, since 1943. Dr. Moldenhauer was born in Mainz, Germany. He graduated cum laude from the Humanistic Gymnasium of his native city. The author's musical studies were carried on concurrently with his academic schooling. Among his teachers was the renowned conductor-pianist Hans Rosbaud, then director of the Musikhochschule. After five years under the Hitler regime, Hans Moldenhauer came to the United States in 1938. He was given citizenship of his adopted country while serving with the Mountain Troops of the U. S. Army. Dr. Moldenhauer lived in the Northwest since 1939, founded the Spokane Conservatory in 1942, and directed the institution since its inception. He holds the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Doctor of Music, and Doctor of Fine Arts."--Dust jacket. |
