Abstract Through his teaching and through his innovative instrumental works, César Franck was one of the most influential French composers of the 19th century. This outstanding edition of selected works for piano has been edited by Franck's famous pupil and biographer. It includes ten pieces, evenly divided between early germinal compositions and important late pieces. The collection begins with Franck's first three efforts in composition, written at the age of fourteen, and unpublished elsewhere ("The three earliest compositions"). Then comes the three interesting, somewhat experimental works "Eglogue," Op. 3; "Premier Grand Caprice," Op. 5; and "Ballade," Op. 9. The four late works feature two short pieces--"The Doll's Lament" and "Danse lente"--and two longer works that are masterpieces of pianoforte composition--"Prelude, Choral and Fugue" and "Prelude, Aria and Finale." Each work is analyzed by the editor in his introduction and the editor also comments authoritatively on Franck's life and music. The musical notation is clearly reproduced and there is ample space for analysis, notes, fingerings, etc.
General noteThis Dover edition is an unabridged republication of the work originally published with the title, Piano compositions by César Franck, by the Oliver Ditson Company, Boston, in 1922 in the series The Musicians Library.
