| Abstract | This book explores the ontological status of musical works, arguing that the "problem of identity" is a pseudoproblem that distracts from the real issue. The author posits that a musical work is not a physical object, the score, or a single performance, but rather an "intentional, intersubjective object" that exists as a potentiality realized through interpretation by performers and listeners. He concludes that the work's identity is preserved across different performances and historical periods because every proper interpretation, within the score's parameters, is valid, making the search for a single, objective identity unnecessary. |
