Abstract The purpose of this dissertation is to characterize Lully's dances. Chapter I explores the art of dancing, as seen in French court dancing and the steps in use at the time of Lully. Chapter II describes metric and rhythmic patterns characteristic to the music and dance of each type, and is the central portion of the dissertation. A brief summary of various aspects of music in general is presented in Chapter III, with references to previous studies by modern scholars and to documents of the late seventeenth century which illuminate the music. Chapter IV consists of an inventory of the pieces under discussion, and Chapter V contains a comprehensive listing of the sources of Lully's secular music, with an extensive commentary.
