Summary | (Producer) When 180 men contracted a mysterious disease at the 1975 American Legion convention in Philadelphia, doctors were mystified. This program details the painstaking investigation into the cause of the disease. Police investigate possible intentional bacteria contamination by terrorists. Gonorrhea, herpes, mumps, and bacteria from rat feces are examined by a medical team as possible causes. Nickel carbon poisoning--suggested by certain laboratory tests--is dismissed as a cause when the substance fails to show up in the livers of victims. Microbiologist Joseph McDade's eventual discovery of the presence of antibodies in the blood of survivors leads to the identification of the Legionnaires' bacterium, and to its treatment. |
