| Abstract | The purpose of this study is to determine how the Western hymn has been adapted into Logoli music. As Christianity has become integral in the life of the Logoli, new music has been composed by the Logoli in Western hymn style as well as based on traditional Logoli idioms. Modern societal changes and demands have caused the syncretism of the hymn in traditional Logoli style with Western musical idioms. The study seeks to identify Western elements that have been adopted and incorporated into traditional Logoli style. In essence, all the four resultant musical styles, namely the Western hymn, the translated Western hymn, the traditional Logoli hymn and the syncretized Logoli hymn, are used in various sectors of society worship services and other cultural functions. This study establishes that characteristics of African traditional music can be illustrated through the examination of Christian hymns that have been adapted and syncretized by African ethnic groups. |
