General note"The writer of the hasty sketch of the life of the artist, Mr. John Vanderlyn, a portion of which has been published by Mr. Dunlap, in his 'History of the arts of design,' was in Europe at the time of the publication of that work and it did not come under his observation until very recently. In consequence of sundry ommissions [sic] in the published sketch and of the general tenor and spirit of Mr. Dunlap's comments, which seemed, at least, to lack courtesy towards Mr. Vanderlyn, if not to be positively illiberal and invidious, the writer of the sketch deems it due to the distinguished artist who was its subject, to publish some comments in his turn, on the remarks of Mr. D. and vindicate so far as is in his power, the character of his friend."--P.
