| Abstract | Written to engage the reader in a musical experience, this book teaches the techniques, styles, and history of music through the language and literature of music itself. The basic approach is through active musical experience. The reader is encouraged to develop an understanding of music through analysis, composition, performance, and listening. Explanations of notation, terminology, and concepts and descriptions of styles, composers, and individual works are concisely written to allow maximum opportunity for the reader to work directly with actual musical materials. The organization is intended to be flexible enough to meet the individual needs of each reader. The introduction provides a general discussion of the nature and meaning of music and information on the physical and psychological characteristics of sound. Each chapter in Part One introduces one of the basic elements of music and traces its usage through the periods of music literature. The chapters in Part Two are devoted to a concentrated study of each of these periods. If a unified chronological approach is preferred, this may be achieved by beginning with Chapter Six and continuing to the end of the book, referring back to material from the first five chapters as needed. |
