General noteFirst work a translation of: Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (Leipzig, 1774). Translation variously attributed to Richard Graves and Daniel Malthus, but probably made by the latter, based on the French version of Georges Deyverdun, published under the title: Werther (Maastricht, 1776). The second work, published anonymously, was written by William James in allusion to Goethe's The sorrows of Werter.
