| Abstract | This book by an expert on the subject is most warmly recommended to all those who treasure the German solo song with accompaniment as one of the germ cells of European music. It embraces its theme in a thorough and scholarly fashion, opening up new ways of understanding and appreciating the German Lied. The author has tried to describe the paths that this art-form has taken, to suggest ways and means of becoming acquainted with the many less well-known, but still very beautiful songs and, above all, of overcoming the seeming barrier of the German language. The book is the result of many years' work with groups of all sorts: school, university, adult, who convinced the author of the joys to be gained by the non-specialist from these songs. |
