Abstract |
The lives of American composers are part of America's history. They send their music from every age and every region. Their songs are the song of America. Our very first composer was Francis Hopkinson. He was a friend of Jefferson and dedicated some of his works to Washington himself. Louis Moreau Gottschalk, born more than a hundred years ago in New Orleans, was the first American musician to gain recognition abroad. Theodore Thomas was our first conductor and certainly one of our greatest popularizers. |
