| Abstract | Johann Sebastian Bach was, of course, the towering monument of classical music. But even so supremely great an artist as he did not spring into full bloom solely by his own genius. He studied his predecessors and contemporaries and was considerably influenced by them. Among these predecessors and contemporaries of the master were some of the most celebrated musicians of all time, musicians who only recently have come into even a modicum of the recognition they merit - Antonio Vivaldi, Alessandro Scarlatti, Domenico Scarlatti, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Arcangelo Corelli, Jean Philippe Rameau, and Francois Couperin, to mention only a few. |
