| Abstract | The purpose of this multivolume history is to provide a comprehensive study of the development of the wind band and wind ensemble. This series explores the connections between wind band music and the great composers, as well as society. The civic wind bands of the seventeenth century, called the Stadtpfeifer, were institutions which helped make possible the first orchestras as we know them. The instrumentation of the modern orchestra can only be understood when one considers the tradition of the earlier wind music and its role in society, particularly in view of the philosophical influence of "the Enlightenment." The survey stops at the year 1900 and does not include the American scene. |
