| Summary | Histological and cytochemical techniques revealed the structural and the morphological changes which occur during the molt and reproductive cycles in the female reproductive tract of the xanthid Panopeus herbsti. The female tract is fundamentally similar to the reproductive tract described in other brachyurans. Molt cycle changes in the "H"-shaped ovaries exhibited by development, growth, and vitellogenesis of oocytes were described in detail. Structural changes in the seminal receptacles and oviducts are directly related to phases of the molt and reproductive cycles. At premolt certain tissues of the seminal receptacle and oviduct increase in size reaching their greatest volume; during intermolt, at copulation, the tissues of the receptacle degenerate reaching their smallest volume. These morphological changes suggest that the ovarian cycle is independent of or not greatly influenced by the molt cycle whereas functions of the seminal receptacles and oviducts are closely synchronized with the molt and reproductive cycles although both cycles are not mutually in phase. |
