Abstract This book gives in concise form the main facts of Vincenzo Bellini's brief life (1801-1835) and enlarges on his affairs with Maddalena Fumaroli and Guiditta Turina. The critical discussion of the music is focused on the operas which are studied in the context of the contemporary Italian stage. The genesis of each of his operas is examined, the close dependence on Bellini's principal collaborator, Romani, is emphasized, and there is consideration of the political climate of the time and its possible repercussions on Bellini's work.
