| Summary | Phytoplanhton abundance and distribution in Currituck Sound, N. C. were studied through analysis of samples taken from 13 stations at approximately monthly intervals from November 1977 through October 1978. Of the phyla represented, the cyanophytes had the greatest density. A total of 204 taxa were found. These represented 67 genera, 14 orders, and 6 phyla. Maximum cell numbers occurred in August, 1973 and maximum biomass in May, 1978. In August, the phytoplankton population consisted of a large number of small species such as blue-green algae with volumes of only a few whereas, the May biomass peak consisted of larger forms. The major portion of the phytoplankton in the water column probably originated through resuspension of sediments through wind action and sloughing of epiphytic forms from submersed macrophytes. A greater Cyanophyta population existed in the northern sound and a larger diatom population in the southern sound. Possible factors involved were shallowness of the sound, restriction of 'water circulation by the marsh islands in the middle reach of the sound, and differences in morphometry and salinity for the two areas. Only 22% of all algal species were euplanktonlc types. |
