| Summary | The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of the spatial aspects of water quality in the White Oak River to the areal variation of cultural features within its watershed. A system of twenty monitoring stations was utilized to test the waters of the River and its tributaries for variations in bacteria concentration, dissolved oxygen, and pH. Using a water quality index (WQIwo), data was analytically combined into a single value or expression reflecting the influences of the parameters tested. Water quality index values were then compared to composite human and animal density figures, and land use intensity computations of corresponding drainage areas (tributary-basins). Comparisons reveal that the spatial variation of water quality in the White Oak River was determined to a great degree by the areal variation in human and animal density; and to a lesser extent by the variation in the intensity of rural land use. It was also discovered that the impact of cultural activities on water quality was dependent on the natural character and conditions of the receiving stream at the time of an influx of cultural pollutants. |
