This book brings together a wide range of Keepnews' writings, including reviews and commentary for The Record Changer, Down Beat, and other magazines; album notes; essays; and discerning appreciations of such artists as Monk, Evans, Wes Montgomery, and Johnny Griffin. As he traces his own transformation from a young traditionalist into one of the leading forces in modern jazz, Keepnews also presents a vivid portrait of jazz in the years since the war. This book offers an intellectual autobiography of the author just by selecting his favorite writings and stitching them together with a little reflective continuity. He loosely follows the progress of his passion for jazz and rounds up pieces on the same subject such as traditional jazz, the "Transition" in his own and others' taste from traditional to modern jazz, "What I Do for a Living" and so on.
