| Abstract | The National Standards for Arts Education specify "what every young American should know and be able to do in the arts," and implementing the Standards will be no easy task. This book examines several issues that are involved in implementation: advocacy, professional development, opportunity to learn, connections among the arts disciplines, and assessment. Providing a comprehensive arts education for America's children will require concerted, long-term efforts by several constituencies: parents, school administrators, school boards, arts agencies and organizations, business, state education agencies, state legislatures. This book lays out a role and a strategy for each of these groups. Implementing the arts Standards will take aggressive planning and policymaking, but the critical importance of the arts in the lives of citizens makes this an undertaking that must succeed. |
