| Abstract | Spicing his account with lively anecdotes and inside stories, the author describes the outpouring of significant musical innovations that emerged during the Roaring Twenties, and evokes the era's uncontrolled psychological and economic profligacy. He examines the improvised music by such artists as Armstrong and Duke Ellington; the Americanization of the Broadway musical theater; the Harlem piano styles; the rise of the classical blues singers; the evolution of ragtime into stride piano; and the emergence of cabaret singers. The author also includes a discography and two lists--songs of the '20s, and films featuring singers and songwriters of the era. |
