Abstract Alma Mahler, the composer's widow, edited and published some 400 of his letters in their original German in 1924. This highly important collection now appears in English. The letters span Mahler's life from his seventeenth year to his death in 1911. Fascinating in themselves, the letters offer vivid insights into Mahler's life and times, his personality, his conducting and, most revealing of all, into his music and its composition. To the contents of the first edition are now added twenty-tree new letters and thirteen written to Mahler by his parents and sisters. The present edition restored passages omitted by Alma Mahler and has been annotated by Mahler scholars.
General noteThe original edition selected by Alma Mahler, enlarged and edited with new introduction, illustrations, and notes by Knud Martner.
