Summary Experimental conditions were developed for a long-term maintenance of blue crabs in a laboratory for the purpose of a study of the effects of fluorinated water on the growth and molting. This study included a detailed investigation on the calcium metabolism during the molting cycles of the blue crabs. The analysis of a series of crab tissue and exoskeleton samples were carried out to determine the amounts of fluoride and calcium in the samples. The fluoride concentrations of the samples were determined through the use of a fluoride ion-selective electrode. The measurements were taken using TISAB as a buffer. The data collected were computer processed to eliminate the time dependence of the electrode response. The calcium analyses were carried out using two different methods. The first method involved the use of the calcium ion-sensitive electrode. The second method made use of a chelometric indicator titration in conjunction with the cupric ion-selective electrode and using a O.1M EGTA solution as the titrant. The experimental data showed that, despite significantly different concentrations of fluoride and calcium in tissue and exoskeleton, the growth and molting of blue crabs was not affected beyond the limits of experimental errors in 10°/oo salt water containing 30 ppm of fluoride.
