Abstract The purpose of this book is to explore the history, philosophies, materials, composers, and works pertaining to those directions in music since the late 1940s which express a radical departure from tradition in concept and/or production. This book is intended as an introduction and general survey of avant-garde and post avant-garde music in the twentieth century to the present, in the hope that it will stimulate the reader to further listening and research. The fifth edition contains a new chapter, "Automated and cybernetic music," to cover very recent advances in computer-centered artificial intelligence and music. Another new chapter, "The new conservatism," recounts attempts at returning to tonality and suggests a cyclic nature to the past thirty to fifty years in contemporary music.
